This hat was donated to the National Archives by the American National Red Cross. An internet search led to a blog on the Knox Milliner, Julia Emily Knox http://www.knoxhatsrevisited.com/history.php The silk lining inside the hat is deteriorated, so we will line the hat with unbuffered tissue paper to support it. The enameled Red Cross pin is attached to the center front of the midnight blue grosgrain ribbon bow.

The Red Cross accession number on the Knox hat, written in ball point ink, indicates that it was the 12th accession in 1955.  A museum today would write accession numbers on a separate tag or label instead of on the silk lining of the hat.  ARC ID: 6882883
