Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln (one day late)

Currently at the Smithsonian American Art Museum is an exhibition Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage. It features photographs taken as  Ms. Leibovitz visited places and objects linked to historical figures who inspire her as an artist. In February 2011, Ms. Leibovitz came to the National Archives to photograph glass plate negatives of President Lincoln, which were captured by Mathew Brady. During her visit, National Archives photograph conservators were present to handle the negatives and monitor light exposure during the shoot. The image above is one of the glass plates that Ms. Leibovitz photographed. Hers is on display in Pilgrimage until May 20.  The lovely photograph she made can also be seen in her book with the same title.
