Conservation: What We Do

In addition to conservators, who treat documents and create custom housings, you will also find conservation scientists in our department. These highly skilled professionals evaluate materials to ensure they can be safely used to store, house, and exhibit archival records. They help develop specifications and conduct quality assurance testing to make sure that archival storage enclosures meet specifications. Because the storage environment is an important component of preservation, conservation scientists use dataloggers to monitor environmental conditions in record storage areas to make sure that conditions are right for the long-term preservation of archival records.

Conservation scientists and conservators may work together to carry out forensic examinations of records for evidence of alteration, such as a Presidential pardon by Abraham Lincoln with an altered date seen on the screen of this testing instrument. An image of this document examination were posted in early 2011 on the National Archives Preservation Facebook Page.
