Conservation: What We Do
One of the many things that the Conservation staff does is make custom housings for oversize or fragile records and artifacts. Archival staff members sometimes find unusual objects in the records, such as mineral samples or these wallets and pocket books of fallen Civil War soldiers (pictured above). In Conservation, we create custom housing for these unique items. Conservation staff also provide training in how to do holdings maintenance and how to handle records safely. In addition, National Archives Conservation staff have specialized technical expertise in the use of anoxic encasements, such as those developed for the Charters of Freedom.
