The enlistment record for William Christman, the first soldier buried in Arlington National Cemetery, came to the lab very damaged and in multiple pieces with large losses. The before treatment photo shows the extent of damage when it arrived.
Conservation treatment included reassembling the separated pieces with very thin Japanese paper adhered with wheat starch paste. Then the large support losses were filled with Japanese papers toned with acrylics to match the color and opacity of the original paper. This photo shows the record after treatment. The Archivist of the United States posted it on his blog as one of his favorite documents.
